While you wait

Severe pain: Over-the-counter ibuprofen (400-600mg) can help if you have no allergies or contraindications. A cold compress on the cheek may reduce swelling.
Knocked-out tooth:Find the tooth, hold by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline (not water if avoidable), and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, store it in milk or saliva and call us immediately — time matters.
Broken tooth: Rinse mouth with warm water. Apply gauze to any bleeding. Save any tooth pieces in milk.
Lost crown or filling: Keep the area clean. Avoid chewing on that side. Sugarless gum can temporarily cover a sharp edge.
