Over-the-counter strips can help a little. Professional whitening β applied by a dentist with the right concentration of gel β does a lot more, a lot faster. Most patients see a difference the same day.
It is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments we offer, and one of the quickest. If you are self-conscious about discoloration from coffee, tea, age, or past smoking, this is usually the first thing worth exploring.
We will be straight with you about what whitening can fix and what it cannot β some stains respond beautifully, others require a different approach.
Professional whitening uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel to break up stain molecules inside the enamel β the outer layer of the tooth. The gel penetrates the enamel and oxidizes the compounds that cause yellowing, leaving the enamel lighter.
It does not change the color of any dental work you already have: crowns, veneers, fillings, and bonding all stay the same shade. It also will not fix staining caused by tetracycline antibiotics, excess fluoride during development (fluorosis), or tooth trauma β those require veneers or bonding.
Durability: most patients see results last 1 to 3 years before noticeable re-staining occurs. Diet and habits are the biggest variables.
We check all of this at the consultation. If whitening is not the right tool, we will tell you β and suggest what is.
We quote your exact cost at the consultation β pricing depends on which option fits your teeth and timeline. For context on what professional whitening typically costs across the region: the ADA notes that professional in-office whitening in the US typically ranges from around $300 to $600; take-home tray systems from $100 to $400. San Diego-area pricing is generally in that range. We will tell you our exact cost before anything is scheduled.
Insurance: Cosmetic whitening is not covered by dental insurance. It is considered elective.
HSA / FSA: Generally not eligible for cosmetic whitening, since it is not classified as a medical necessity under most plans. Check your specific plan.
Financing: We can discuss payment options at your appointment. CareCredit is one option patients commonly use for cosmetic work.
Cost ranges are public regional averages, not our specific pricing. Confirm your quote during the consultation.
Total chair time: approximately 60 β 90 minutes.
The 48 hours immediately following whitening matter most β enamel pores are temporarily more open and absorb stains more readily.
